Joey K’s Restaurant & Bar – New Orleans, Louisiana

Joey K’s Restaurant and Bar started as Tony’s in the 1970s, one block from its current location on the corner of Seventh and Magazine Street in the Garden District. It has been under the name Joey K’s since the transition that brought it to this address, and it has been serving the same New Orleans dishes — red beans and rice, jambalaya, po-boys, fried seafood — for decades without meaningful change. The restaurant appeared in Season 5, Episode 11 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Regional Classics,” which aired February 16, 2009. Food Network called it a place to go for “a real taste of Louisiana soul food.” The red beans and rice have been so consistently recognized that Joey K’s was one of the final four competitors in the inaugural Bean Madness tournament, which pitted 64 New Orleans restaurants against each other for the city’s best red beans. The Magazine Street Foodie Tour has made it a regular stop. The menu items are named after local streets, with the Shrimp Magazine being the most famous example. The century-old building has a second-floor private space with a wraparound balcony overlooking Magazine Street available for events.

About Joey K’s

Joey K’s occupies a charming century-old building in a neighborhood that takes Magazine Street seriously. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday for lunch and dinner with Sundays off — a rare day of rest for a New Orleans institution that has been feeding the Garden District and Irish Channel communities for over 40 years. The food is what the locals eat: red beans on Monday in the New Orleans tradition, daily specials that reflect what’s in season, and a po-boy program that draws visitors away from the French Quarter tourist circuit and into the real city. The 18-oz frosted schooner beer is the drink that sets the tone for the meal.

What to Eat at Joey K’s

The Shrimp Magazine is the house namesake dish, a shrimp preparation named after the street the restaurant sits on. The Red Beans and Rice are the Monday staple and the dish that earned Joey K’s its final-four finish in Bean Madness. The Trout Tchoupitoulas — fresh fish lightly floured, sautéed, and topped with shrimp and crabmeat — is the seafood centerpiece most regulars return to. The Fried Oysters, Jambalaya, and Oyster Po’ Boy are the other DDD highlights. The Fried Green Tomatoes with Remoulade is the appetizer worth starting with. The Blackberry Cobbler is the dessert regulars refuse to skip.
