Joe’s Cable Car Restaurant – San Francisco, California – Closed

Joe Obegi opened Joe’s Cable Car Restaurant on Mission Street in San Francisco’s Excelsior District in 1965, when burgers were $0.40. He ran it until March 16, 2014 — 49 years, same owner, same address, same philosophy — when he closed the doors to retire rather than sell to someone who might compromise the quality. When Joe’s Cable Car appeared in Season 2, Episode 12 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — “Burgers, Rings and Fries,” aired January 21, 2008 — it was already 43 years into a run that would end six years later with one of the more heartfelt final days in San Francisco restaurant history. A firetruck full of firefighters came for the last burger. A neon sign out front had been reading “Joe grinds his own chuck fresh daily” for decades. That sign was true until the last day.

About Joe’s Cable Car Restaurant

The building was originally constructed to look like a cable car — which fit the name and the Excelsior District aesthetic. Joe Obegi built his burger philosophy around a simple premise: USDA choice beef chuck, ground fresh in-house every day, cooked to order, served open-faced for inspection, with all garnishes on the side. No secret sauces. No shortcuts. The menu encouraged customers to taste a small piece of the patty without the bread first, the way food critics test a burger. That confidence in the product was not misplaced — San Francisco food lovers voted Joe’s the best burger in the city year after year.

Joe closed in 2014 at age 75, unwilling to sell and give someone else control of the name and the quality. The building was subsequently slated for demolition to make way for condos. San Francisco lost a genuine landmark.

What Was on the Menu

The Fresh Ground Chuck Burger in any configuration — double, triple, or higher — was the entire point. The beef was ground daily from USDA choice chuck, formed into balls, smashed flat on the grill, and cooked to order. The ordering process at Joe’s was interactive: you specified how you wanted the beef cooked, like a steak, and the kitchen treated it accordingly. The Orange Freeze was the milkshake-style signature drink that regulars mention in the same breath as the burger.
