Victor’s 1959 Cafe on Grand Avenue in Minneapolis has been serving Cuban food to the Twin Cities since 1994, named for the year that holds so much significance in Cuban history. The restaurant brings the flavors of pre-revolution Cuba to a Minneapolis neighborhood restaurant in a way that has built a 30-year local following and earned national recognition. It appeared in Season 4, Episode 9 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Big Flavor,” which aired September 29, 2008, and Guy Fieri found Cuban cooking done with authenticity and care far from the Florida coast where most Midwesterners would expect to find it.

The Cuban Sandwich is the flagship, pressed and built on Cuban bread with the traditional combination of roasted pork, ham, Swiss, pickles, and mustard. The Ropa Vieja, slow-braised shredded beef in tomato and pepper sauce, is the other Cuban classic worth ordering. The Plantains, both sweet and savory preparations, are the sides regulars add to everything. The Cuban Coffee is the drink that completes the meal.
