Rodney Muirhead grew up in Texas, moved to Portland, and got tired of not being able to find Texas-style BBQ. In 2006 he opened Podnah’s Pit Barbecue on NE Killingsworth and started smoking brisket, ribs, and sausage over oak and pecan the way he grew up eating it. Portland took notice immediately. Podnah’s appeared in Season 7, Episode 5 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Only At This Joint,” which aired August 31, 2009. Guy Fieri found the real Texas BBQ tradition fully transplanted to the Pacific Northwest — proper smoke ring, proper bark, proper Texas attitude about what BBQ should be. Podnah’s has since become one of the most awarded BBQ restaurants in Oregon and a Portland institution.
