Maine Diner – Wells, Maine

Maine Diner on Post Road in Wells has been a New England institution since Dick Henry and his brother opened it in 1953, serving Maine seafood and classic American diner food to a loyal community of locals and the summer visitors who make the journey from Boston and beyond to the southern Maine coast. It appeared in Season 9, Episode 13 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Old Time Attitude,” which aired August 9, 2010. Guy Fieri found lobster stew, stuffed haddock, and blueberry pie — the holy trinity of a Maine diner done properly — and declared the lobster pie one of the best dishes he’d eaten on the show.

What to Eat

The Lobster Pie is the DDD signature — chunks of fresh Maine lobster in a rich, buttery sauce topped with Ritz cracker crumbs and baked until golden. Guy called it one of the best things he’d eaten on the show. The Lobster Stew, thick with lobster meat and cream, is the other lobster preparation worth ordering. The Stuffed Haddock with seafood stuffing is the whole-fish entree that earns its place alongside the lobster dishes. The Maine Blueberry Pie with wild Maine blueberries in a flaky scratch crust is the dessert that belongs on every table. The Breakfast Plates with Maine-made maple syrup are the morning reason to arrive early before the lunch crowd builds. Find a Wells or Ogunquit hotel on Booking.com.
