Harry Shapiro grew up in Philadelphia, trained as a chef, and eventually landed in Santa Fe, where he brought his Philadelphia food sensibility — particularly a deep affection for scrapple — into a Southwestern roadhouse setting. Harry’s Roadhouse has been on Old Las Vegas Highway just outside of downtown Santa Fe since the 1990s, earning a devoted local following and being named Santa Fe’s Restaurant of the Year by the Santa Fe Reporter in 2005. It appeared in Season 5, Episode 1 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “What’s For Breakfast,” which aired November 10, 2008. Harry told Guy the pork butt scrapple with polenta and sage came straight from Philadelphia. Guy pointed out that no one in Philadelphia could tell him exactly what part of the pig it came from. The New Mexican classics — blue cornmeal waffles, migas with pickled jalapeño, killer cinnamon rolls — balance the menu alongside the Philly imports.

About Harry’s Roadhouse
Harry’s sprawls across a colorful, whimsical space with multiple dining rooms, a garden patio with a stream running alongside it for summer dining, and walls covered in eclectic art. The menu runs from breakfast through dinner seven days a week and covers more ground than most roadhouses attempt: New Mexican turkey enchiladas, brick oven pizza, Moroccan vegetable stew, Cajun-style duck hash, hangar steak with Colorado mole, and a fresh pie and homemade ice cream program that earns its own mention in nearly every review. The parking lot fills up because the locals know what they have. Note that Harry Shapiro has since sold the restaurant, but the kitchen continues operating with the same menu and sensibility.
What to Eat at Harry’s Roadhouse
The Pork Butt Scrapple with Polenta and Sage is the DDD signature, a Philadelphia transplant that found its home in Santa Fe. The Blue Cornmeal Waffles are the New Mexico classic done properly, served with honey butter. The Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and Brioche Stuffed with Peaches were the other DDD highlights. The Huevos Divorciados — eggs dressed in both red and green chile on the same plate — is the breakfast item that captures New Mexico’s “Christmas” chile tradition. For lunch and dinner, the Cinnamon Rolls, Green Chile Cheeseburger, and Homemade Pies (rotating daily) round out the reasons to stay past breakfast.
