Barrio Cafe appeared in Season 17, Episode 5 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Peppers, Pork and Poutine,” which aired May 20, 2013, as a Phoenix authentic Mexican restaurant on North 16th Street that chef Silvana Salcido Esparza built into one of the most celebrated Mexican restaurants in Arizona — serving the regional Mexican cooking traditions of Oaxaca, Veracruz, and the Yucatan that most Phoenix Mexican restaurants had never attempted, earning James Beard Award nominations and a national food media reputation along the way. The restaurant has since permanently closed.
