Taste of Peru – Chicago, Illinois

Taste of Peru on North Clark Street in Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood has been bringing authentic Peruvian cooking to the city since it opened, serving ceviche, lomo saltado, aji de gallina, and the full Peruvian coastal and highland food traditions in a setting that earns a devoted following from Chicago’s Latin American community and the food-curious city around it. It appeared in Season 8, Episode 5 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Home and Away,” which aired February 1, 2010. Guy Fieri found a Peruvian kitchen doing the real thing in a neighborhood that makes Rogers Park one of Chicago’s most culinarily diverse corridors.

What to Eat

The Ceviche — fresh fish cured in lime juice with aji amarillo, red onion, and cilantro — is the Peruvian flagship. Lomo Saltado, stir-fried beef with tomatoes, peppers, and soy sauce over rice and fries, is the coastal-Asian hybrid that defines Peruvian cooking for most first-timers. Aji de Gallina and the rotating daily specials are worth checking when you arrive. Find a Chicago hotel on Booking.com.
