Mike’s City Diner has been a South End institution since Chef Jay Hajj opened it in 1995, and it didn’t take long for the rest of the country to catch up to what Boston already knew. It appeared in Season 2, Episode 7 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — “Talkin’ Turkey,” aired November 10, 2007 — and Guy Fieri found a place that serves cops, construction workers, and former presidents with equal enthusiasm. Bill Clinton has eaten here. That’s the kind of cross-demographic appeal that only comes from genuinely great food at genuinely fair prices.
The Food Network called Mike’s Famous Pilgrim Sandwich one of the five best Thanksgiving dishes in America. MSN named it the best diner in Massachusetts. Guy Fieri has featured it on multiple Food Network programs. The accolades stack up, but the diner itself stays exactly the same — big portions, scratch cooking, fast service, and a room full of people who clearly know where to eat.

About Mike’s City Diner
Jay Hajj opened Mike’s in the South End neighborhood of Boston in 1995 with a straightforward vision: classic American diner food made right, served fast, at prices that don’t require a second thought. Three decades later, the vision hasn’t changed and neither has the approach. Everything is made from scratch. The turkey is fresh-roasted. The corned beef hash is the real thing. The portions are sized for people who actually work for a living.
The South End location puts it in one of Boston’s most vibrant neighborhoods, and Mike’s has been part of that neighborhood’s fabric since before the area’s transformation. Locals, visitors, and food tourists all end up in the same line, which tends to wrap around the block on weekend mornings. That’s not a complaint — that’s a sign.
What to Eat at Mike’s City Diner
The Pilgrim Sandwich is the signature — fresh-roasted turkey, homemade stuffing, cranberry sauce, and herbaceous gravy piled onto a massive roll. It’s a Thanksgiving dinner in sandwich form and the dish most first-timers are pointed toward. The Corned Beef Hash is the other must-order, made from scratch and consistently called one of the best in Boston.
The French Toast, Mike’s Clam Chowder, and the full Turkey Dinner round out the highlights from the DDD episode. The home fries have their own loyal following. Breakfast is served until 3:00 PM daily, which is exactly the right call.
If you want to bring some Triple D spirit into your own kitchen, Guy’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives: An All-American Road Trip with Recipes is the place to start.
