La Isla Restaurant on Washington Street in Hoboken has been serving authentic Cuban and Caribbean cooking to the Hudson County community since it opened, building a menu around the ropa vieja, Cuban sandwiches, and the home cooking of the Caribbean island table that earns a New Jersey restaurant its destination reputation among the Cuban and Latin communities of the New York metro area. The Cuban Sandwich — roast pork, ham, Swiss, pickles, and mustard pressed on Cuban bread — is the La Isla signature and the item that earns it its Hoboken reputation. The Ropa Vieja with slow-braised shredded flank steak in a Creole tomato sauce over rice and black beans is the Cuban comfort food classic done with the depth of flavor that only a long braise produces.
