Haus Murphy’s – Glendale, Arizona

Brett and Rose Hoffmann opened Haus Murphy’s in historic downtown Glendale in 1996, with Rose’s Bavarian upbringing providing the recipes and Brett running the kitchen. The restaurant sits a block from Murphy Park in the antique district of downtown Glendale, and it has been serving authentic German food — schnitzel, sauerbraten, rouladen, potato pancakes, giant pretzels, and steins of beer — to the Phoenix Valley for nearly 30 years. Haus Murphy’s appeared in Season 5, Episode 13 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Family Favorites,” which aired March 23, 2009. Guy Fieri returned a decade later for Triple D Nation. The paprika schnitzel was named by the Phoenix New Times as one of the 100 best dishes in Phoenix. A live accordion player performs Friday and Saturday evenings, which explains why reservations for large parties tend to book up early.

About Haus Murphy’s

The restaurant occupies a space with a biergarten alongside the building and a traditional long-table Wunderbar inside. The decor is classic Bavarian: steins, German memorabilia, and the “I got my schnitzel pounded at Haus Murphy’s” banner over the biergarten that has been making first-timers laugh for years. The kitchen has remained committed to the same traditional dishes since opening day. Every dish is made fresh daily. The ninety-five-cent cup of daily soup is a genuinely remarkable anachronism in the current restaurant landscape.

What to Eat at Haus Murphy’s

The Paprika Schnitzel is the Phoenix New Times-recognized standout, a breaded and pan-fried cutlet finished with paprika cream sauce. The Rouladen — thinly sliced beef rolled with pickles, carrots, and onions in a brown gravy — is the dish traditional German food lovers specifically seek out. The Bavarian Giant Pretzel with spicy mustard is the table starter most regulars order before looking at the menu. The Potato Pancakes with sour cream and applesauce have their own following. The Sauerbraten and Haus Spaetzle round out the authentic German classics. The Sauerkraut Chocolate Cake is the dessert that surprises and converts every skeptic who tries it.
