El Indio Mexican Restaurant – San Diego, California

Ralph Pesqueira Sr. started El Indio in 1940 as a tortilla factory at the corner of India and Grape Streets in San Diego. He made them by hand. Fresh corn tortillas, supplied to local restaurants. He also coined the word “taquito” for his rolled tacos, which is a detail that belongs in the record books. El Indio appeared in Season 2, Episode 9 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — “Family Owned,” aired November 23, 2007 — and Guy Fieri found a place that had been running on family recipes and community loyalty for 67 years. It has since been running for over 84 years and shows no signs of slowing down.

El Indio is not just a San Diego institution. It was chosen by the creator of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives himself to represent Mexican-American cuisine in a book about America’s greatest food contributions. That’s the level of respect this place commands.

About El Indio Mexican Restaurant

The Pesqueira family has been running El Indio since 1940. The original tortilla factory evolved into a full restaurant while maintaining the tradition of making everything by hand — including nixtamalizing the corn for the tortillas on a high-volume conveyor belt that visitors can still watch in operation. The recipes draw from multiple states and regions of Mexico, incorporating traditional methods across the board.

El Indio has been recognized with the California Restaurant Association’s Gold Medallion Award for Best Casual Mexican Restaurant multiple times. It has been featured on the Travel Channel’s Mexican Food Paradise, Food Network’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and in multiple publications. Even a couple of U.S. Presidents have reportedly had El Indio food served at the White House. Pete Wilson had it cater his gubernatorial inauguration. That’s a press resume that took 84 years to build.

What to Eat at El Indio Mexican Restaurant

The Taquitos are the signature — the rolled tacos that Ralph Pesqueira Sr. invented and named. Made with fresh handmade tortillas, loaded with guacamole, lettuce, and cheese, they’re the dish most people are directed toward on a first visit and the dish most people order again on every subsequent one.

The Handmade Chile Rellenos were highlighted during the DDD filming. The Carne Asada Tacos, Carnitas Plate, and California Burrito round out the must-order list. The chips are freshly made and available for purchase to take home — they’re shipped across the United States and the shipping addresses should tell you something about the quality.
