Murphy’s Bar and Grill on Merchant Street in downtown Honolulu has been the city’s Irish pub since Don Murphy opened it in 1987, serving the classic Irish-American pub food alongside the kind of comfort food menu that makes Murphy’s the place downtown Honolulu workers end up after work and tourists end up when they venture beyond Waikiki. It appeared in Season 9, Episode 4 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Bringin’ It Home,” which aired May 17, 2010. Guy Fieri found an Irish pub in Hawaii doing the real pub food thing — corned beef, shepherd’s pie, fish and chips — with scratch-made quality in a setting that has earned 35 years of downtown loyalty.

What to Eat
The Corned Beef and Cabbage is the Irish classic done properly — slow-braised, tender, and served with the traditional accompaniments. The Shepherd’s Pie with ground lamb and a proper mashed potato crust is the comfort food standout. The Fish and Chips in beer batter with malt vinegar is the pub food benchmark. The Murphy’s Burger is the American answer on a menu that covers both traditions well. Irish whiskey and draft Irish beers complete the experience. Find a Honolulu hotel on Booking.com.
