Ziggy Gruber is the third generation of a New York deli family who moved to Houston and opened Kenny and Ziggy’s New York Delicatessen in 1999, determined to bring the full New York Jewish deli experience — towering sandwiches, house-cured pastrami, matzo ball soup, knishes, cheesecake — to a city that had never had the real thing. It appeared in Season 7, Episode 6 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “You Picked ‘Em,” which aired September 7, 2009. Guy Fieri found a deli operating at a level that would satisfy the most demanding New Yorker, which is the highest possible compliment for this category of restaurant. Ziggy’s grandfather worked at Carnegie Deli. His father worked at Stage Deli. The recipes are family property.
