Pizzeria Luigi on 25th Street in San Diego’s Golden Hill neighborhood has been making New York-style pizza by the slice since 1992, run by Luigi Agostini who left his native Italy and eventually landed in Southern California with a determination to make pizza the way he grew up eating it. It appeared in Season 5, Episode 2 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Real Deal Italian,” which aired November 17, 2008. Guy Fieri found a small pizza operation doing everything from scratch: the dough fermented over two days, the sauce from whole San Marzano tomatoes, the cheese fresh. Guy loved the meatballs and the sausage pizza specifically. Luigi’s approach — simple, quality ingredients, no shortcuts — is the same thing that has kept the slice window busy for over 30 years.
