The Creole Creamery opened in February 2004 in a building on Prytania Street in Uptown New Orleans that had previously housed a McKenzie’s Bakery, a beloved local chain. Owner David Bergeron converted the space into an ice cream parlor with pink walls, chalkboard paint, and a flavor program built around New Orleans culinary identity: Lavender Honey, Sweet Potato Sassafras Praline, King Cake (seasonal), Creole Cream Cheese, and over 400 flavors developed by head chef Bryan Gilmore over the years. The Creole Creamery appeared in Season 4, Episode 5 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Brain Freeze,” which aired August 11, 2008. Guy Fieri called Gilmore a wizard. The Tchoupitoulas Challenge — named after the famous New Orleans street — is eight scoops of ice cream and eight toppings served in a bowl large enough to qualify as a separate entity. The restaurant has also appeared on Man vs. Food.

About The Creole Creamery
The Creole Creamery operates in the Uptown neighborhood, one of New Orleans’s most walkable residential areas a few miles from the French Quarter, with a second location in Lakeview. The flavor rotation at any given time includes roughly 30 options across traditional, chocolate, sorbet, and sugar-free categories, with the rotating seasonal and specialty flavors being the reason regulars come back weekly. The Tchoupitoulas Challenge requires finishing eight scoops of your choice and eight toppings solo. Roughly one in 20 challengers completes it. Winners go on the wall.
What to Eat at The Creole Creamery
The Lavender Honey flavor is the one most consistently cited by regulars as the starting point for any visit. The Creole Cream Cheese and Sweet Potato Sassafras Praline bring New Orleans flavor profiles directly into ice cream form. The Tchoupitoulas Challenge is the spectacle option: eight scoops, eight toppings, whipped cream, cherries, and wafers, served for around $30. The Creole Creamery Special Sundae is the house signature for anyone who wants the full experience without the commitment of the challenge. Samples are encouraged and freely given.
