O’Rourke’s Diner on Main Street in Middletown, Connecticut was one of the most beloved diners in New England, operating since 1941 in an authentic 1946 Mountain View diner car that owner Brian O’Rourke ran for decades with a scratch-made menu well beyond standard diner expectations. It appeared in Season 5, Episode 4 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Places You Sent Me,” which aired December 1, 2008. Guy Fieri found Irish oatmeal pancakes, eggs baked in cream with fresh herbs, and a kitchen operating at a level that earned consistent national recognition. O’Rourke’s has been included in Jane and Michael Stern’s Roadfood and was a Connecticut institution for over 80 years. The diner closed in June 2023. Brian O’Rourke passed away in 2024.

The 1946 Mountain View diner car on Main Street in Middletown was as close to a perfect American diner as the format produces: small, personal, run by an owner who cooked everything himself and knew every regular by name. Brian O’Rourke operated the diner for decades, surviving a major fire in 2006 that destroyed the interior and required a full restoration before reopening in 2007. The DDD appearance came just a year after the reopening, capturing a diner that had survived its worst moment and returned with the same scratch-cooking identity intact. O’Rourke’s appeared in Roadfood, received national food media coverage, and built a cross-state following that had people driving from New York and Massachusetts specifically for the Irish oatmeal pancakes.
