Since 1966, Falafel’s Drive-In has been doing one thing on Stevens Creek Boulevard in San Jose: making falafel the right way, from scratch, every single day. It showed up in Season 2, Episode 1 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — “Totally Fried,” aired October 1, 2007 — and Guy Fieri found exactly what the show was built to find. A walk-up window. Picnic tables. A menu that hasn’t needed reinventing because it was right the first time. Middle Eastern food at a California drive-in sounds like an odd combination until you’re standing there with a falafel sandwich in one hand and a banana shake in the other, and then it makes complete sense.
Falafel’s has been a San Jose institution for nearly 60 years. Guy Fieri isn’t the only notable regular — Steve Jobs reportedly ate here often. That’s the kind of neighborhood credibility that doesn’t come from a television appearance.

About Falafel’s Drive-In
Anton and Zahie Nijmeh left Israel in 1966 and took over what had been a Sno-White Drive-In on Stevens Creek Boulevard. They kept the drive-in format and slowly introduced the food they knew best — falafel, hummus, tabouli, gyros — handing out samples to skeptical customers until the neighborhood caught on. It didn’t take long. By the time their children, including daughter Joanne Boyle, took over the operation, Falafel’s had become the kind of place that locals don’t need to explain to each other. You just know.
The setup is pure drive-in: a walk-up ordering window, covered outdoor seating with picnic tables, and a kitchen you can watch working through the window. Everything is cooked to order, which means a 10-minute wait is standard and worth every second. The walls inside are covered with murals — including a painted image of Guy Fieri from his DDD visit. The retro sign out front has been glowing since the Johnson administration.
Falafel’s has also appeared on Man v. Food, adding to a TV record that reflects what regulars already knew: this place is the real thing.
What to Eat at Falafel’s Drive-In
The Falafel Sandwich is the anchor — chickpeas, parsley, and white onion ground together, seasoned with sea salt and a spice blend that includes cumin, scooped into balls and deep-fried, then loaded into a large pita with lettuce, tomato, tahini, and homemade harissa. Ten falafel balls per sandwich. That’s not a misprint.
The Banana Shake is made with real bananas — thick, creamy, and the thing most regulars order alongside their falafel without a second thought. The Food Network also highlighted the Gyros, Tabouli, and the Koubby — essentially a meat falafel, larger than the standard and paired with two dipping sauces. The daily special combining a large falafel sandwich and a banana shake is one of the best value meals in San Jose.
Open Monday through Saturday 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. No drive-through — everything is cooked to order at the walk-up window.
