Cattlemen’s Cafe opened in 1910 in Oklahoma City’s Stockyards City, feeding cowboys, ranchers, and cattle haulers in a district where herds were driven from across the state to meet the East’s demand for beef. In 1945, owner Hank Frey ran out of luck and money at a dice game at the Biltmore Hotel and wagered the restaurant against Gene Wade’s life savings that he could roll a hard six — two threes. Wade rolled it. The “33” brand still hangs on the wall of the Hereford Room. Cattlemen’s appeared in Season 7, Episode 9 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Blast from the Past,” which aired October 19, 2009. It is Oklahoma City’s oldest continuously operating restaurant, inducted into the National Steakhouse Hall of Fame, and has fed John Wayne, Ronald Reagan, Reba McEntire, and a sitting US President. The steaks are naturally aged and charcoal-broiled from corn-fed Midwest cattle.

What to Eat
The Naturally Aged Steaks are the main event — USDA Prime or Choice, charcoal-broiled, served in a dining room that hasn’t changed much since 1945. The Lamb Fries (fried lamb testicles) are the adventurous appetizer the regulars order without hesitation. The Steak and Eggs Breakfast, served from 6:00 AM, is the cowboy start to a morning in the Stockyards. The House Salad Dressing, a secret recipe passed down on a yellowed piece of paper, comes with every salad. Find an Oklahoma City hotel on Booking.com and pair Cattlemen’s with a morning at the Oklahoma National Stockyards next door.
