Caplansky’s has been building a reputation as Toronto’s most celebrated Jewish deli since Zane Caplansky opened the original location in 2009, producing house-cured smoked meat — the Montreal-style cured beef brisket that is Canada’s contribution to the Jewish deli tradition — with the slow-curing and smoking commitment that earns a deli its national reputation. It appeared in Season 16, Episode 13 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Real Deal Roots,” which aired March 25, 2013. Guy Fieri found a Toronto deli doing smoked meat with the authenticity and craft that puts Caplansky’s in the conversation alongside Montreal’s Schwartz’s as one of the great Canadian Jewish deli operations. The restaurant has since relocated and currently operates at Pearson International Airport Terminal 3 in Mississauga.

The Smoked Meat Sandwich — house-cured beef brisket smoked low and slow in the Montreal tradition, sliced thick and piled on rye bread with mustard — is the Caplansky’s signature and the sandwich that built the deli’s Toronto reputation.
