Gazala’s Place on 9th Avenue in Manhattan’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood has been serving the food of the Druze people — an Arabic-speaking minority community with roots in Lebanon, Syria, and Israel whose cooking tradition is distinct from the broader Middle Eastern cuisines most New Yorkers are familiar with — since Gazala Halabi opened it, building a menu around hand-made pita, Druze flatbreads, and the slow-cooked dishes that are genuinely unavailable anywhere else in New York City. It appeared in Season 14, Episode 10 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “International Eats,” which aired June 18, 2012. Guy Fieri found a Hell’s Kitchen kitchen producing a cuisine that most Americans had never encountered and that earns its DDD segment on uniqueness and quality in equal measure.

What to Eat
The Druze Pita — a thin, hand-stretched flatbread baked on a saj griddle, served with za’atar, olive oil, and labneh — is the bread that earns Gazala’s its reputation and the item most first-timers order before anything else arrives. The Shakshuka with eggs poached in spiced tomato sauce is the Middle Eastern breakfast dish that earns its own devoted lunch and dinner following. The Hummus, made from scratch with proper tahini and fresh lemon, is the appetizer that belongs on every table. The Lamb Dishes slow-cooked with Druze spice blends are the entrees that reflect the cultural tradition most distinctly. Find a New York City hotel on Travelocity.
