Mahony’s Po-Boy Shop on Magazine Street has been one of New Orleans’s most celebrated po-boy operations since it opened in 2008, building a reputation around high-quality ingredients on freshly baked French bread at a time when the city’s po-boy tradition needed both preservation and elevation. It appeared in Season 11, Episode 2 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Po’ Boys, Pasta and Pork,” which aired January 10, 2011. Guy Fieri found a New Orleans sandwich kitchen doing the po-boy the right way — quality proteins, properly dressed French bread, and the combination of crunch and filling that defines the form. The shop closed for a period but reopened under new management in 2024 and continues operating on Magazine Street.

What to Eat
The Roast Beef Po-Boy with debris gravy is the New Orleans classic that Mahony’s built its reputation on — slow-roasted beef, shredded, piled onto French bread and dressed with the pan drippings that make it properly messy. The Shrimp Po-Boy, fried Gulf shrimp on French bread fully dressed, is the other flagship that earns its place on the must-order list. The Fried Oyster Po-Boy is the seasonal option worth ordering when local Gulf oysters are at their peak. The Surf and Turf Po-Boy combining shrimp and roast beef is the over-the-top option that earns Mahony’s its creative reputation. Find a New Orleans hotel on Trivago.
