Louis’ Basque Corner – Reno, Nevada

Louis’ Basque Corner on East 4th Street has been Reno’s window into the Basque culinary tradition since Louis Erreguible opened it in 1967, serving the family-style meals that Basque sheepherders brought to the Great Basin when they came to work the ranges of Nevada and California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It appeared in Season 9, Episode 3 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Globetrottin’,” which aired May 10, 2010. Guy Fieri sat at the communal table, ate lamb stew, chorizo, oxtail, and multiple courses served without being asked. He declared it one of the most unique dining experiences on the show.

What to Eat

Louis’ serves family-style, which means you don’t order from a menu so much as receive a procession of courses. The meal typically starts with Basque Bean Soup and bread, moves through Salad and Pickled Tongue as a traditional appetizer, and arrives at the main courses — Lamb Stew, Oxtail, Chorizo, and the rotating daily proteins that reflect what’s being slow-cooked that day. The Picon Punch, the bittersweet Basque aperitif made with Amer Picon, grenadine, brandy, and soda, is the drink that has been poured here since 1967 and is as much a part of the experience as the food.
