Andy Ricker spent years traveling and eating in northern Thailand before opening Pok Pok in 2005 as a tiny shack in his front yard on SE Division Street in Portland, serving Vietnamese-style fish sauce chicken wings and the regional Thai food of Chiang Mai that most Americans had never encountered. The restaurant grew from that shack into one of the most celebrated Thai restaurants in the country. Pok Pok appeared in Season 7, Episode 7 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “You Can Say That Again,” which aired October 5, 2009. Guy Fieri found the Ike’s Vietnamese Fish Sauce Wings and couldn’t stop eating them. Ricker won a James Beard Award for Best Chef Northwest in 2011. The restaurant expanded to New York, Los Angeles, and multiple Portland locations before the pandemic forced closures across the empire. Pok Pok Portland is permanently closed.
