The Wienery on Cedar Avenue in Minneapolis has been a neighborhood fixture in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood since 1981, serving hot dogs, burgers, and diner food to a community that includes University of Minnesota students, Somali immigrants, longtime Minneapolis residents, and anyone else who finds their way to the little red stand on the south end of the Cedar Avenue strip. It appeared in Season 4, Episode 3 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Burgers and Dogs,” which aired July 28, 2008, as a Minneapolis hot dog operation with more personality per square foot than most full-service restaurants manage. The Wienery is cash only and proud of it.

About The Wienery
The Wienery is a small operation with a big neighborhood footprint. The Cedar-Riverside neighborhood it anchors is one of the most culturally diverse in Minneapolis, and the Wienery has served as a common gathering point for that community for over 40 years. The hot dogs are all-beef Vienna Beef, the buns are steamed, and the toppings go well beyond ketchup and mustard into a menu that reflects the neighborhood it serves: Somali-influenced flavors alongside classic Chicago-style and classic diner constructions. The kitchen is tiny. The portions are not.
What to Eat at The Wienery
The All-Beef Vienna Beef Hot Dogs are the foundation, dressed any way you want from the full topping menu. The Cheeseburger holds its own on a menu anchored by the dog. The Breakfast Burrito and the Daily Specials are worth checking when you arrive. The menu is small and changes with the kitchen’s mood, which is entirely the point. Cash only.
