Charlie Parker’s Diner – Springfield, Illinois

The building that houses Charlie Parker’s Diner is a genuine World War II-era Quonset hut — a curved steel prefabricated military structure converted into one of Springfield’s most beloved breakfast and lunch spots. The diner has occupied the same 700 North Street address since 1991, when it was opened under the current name. Mike and Cindy Murphy are the fifth owners, having purchased it on January 1, 2009 — just after the DDD appearance. It appeared in Season 3, Episode 3 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — “Regional Favorites,” aired March 24, 2008 — and Guy Fieri had a field day with the Horseshoe Sandwich, which is the Springfield, Illinois dish that has been a regional institution since it was invented at the Leland Hotel in 1928. Charlie Parker’s serves one of the most celebrated versions in the city.

About Charlie Parker’s Diner

The Quonset hut exterior is not a gimmick — it’s a genuine WWII-era structure that gives Charlie Parker’s a silhouette unlike any other diner in the country. Inside, the black-and-white tile floors, neon signs, and diner counter create a classic American breakfast environment. The kitchen has been voted Best Breakfast in Springfield by both the State Journal-Register and Illinois Times from 2009 through 2014. The restaurant won the Thomas Hometown Breakfast Battle Grand Championship. The Wall Street Journal and Chicago Tribune have both covered it. None of that changed the fundamentals: the horseshoe is still the centerpiece, breakfast is served all day, and nothing leaves the kitchen undersized.

Charlie Parker’s is open until 2:00 PM daily — strictly a breakfast and lunch operation. Hours are 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM Monday through Saturday, 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM Sunday. There is a Four Stack of Giant Pancakes challenge: finish all four 16-inch pancakes and the meal is on the house, plus a t-shirt and gift card.

What to Eat at Charlie Parker’s Diner

The Breakfast Horseshoe is the signature — the Springfield classic adapted for morning: grilled toast as the base, breakfast meat and eggs stacked on top, then hash browns, all finished with cheese sauce or gravy. It was invented in 1928 as a lunch item and Charlie Parker’s turned it into an all-day tradition. The Pony Shoe is the slightly smaller version for the uninitiated. The 16-Inch Giant Pancake — served on a pizza tray — is the other landmark item. Guy Fieri featured it specifically during filming. The Award-Winning Blueberry Stuffed French Toast Casserole is the Sunday special that has its own following. The Biscuits and Gravy are the everyday standard done right.

After conquering a horseshoe, bring the Flavortown energy home with Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Garlic Butter Dry Rub for eggs and breakfast meats, and Guy Fieri’s Kitchen Textiles to kit out the home breakfast station properly.
