Ramona Cafe has been on Main Street since 1936, serving San Diego County’s backcountry the kind of scratch-made comfort food that doesn’t need a trend to justify itself. It appeared in Season 2, Episode 1 — “Totally Fried,” aired October 1, 2007 — and Guy Fieri left with a clear opinion: this was a small-town knockout with big flavor. Hard to argue with that.

About Ramona Cafe

The cafe started as Ramona Bakery and Donut Shop before evolving into the full diner operation it is today. For 36 years, owner Sonja Vanderveen ran the kitchen with a hands-on approach — grinding meat fresh, sourcing local eggs, baking daily. When the Food Network came through in 2007, it was Sonja’s food that Guy dug into on camera. The cafe changed hands in 2023 and again in early 2024, when Dalia Nogueda — who had worked at Ramona Cafe for nearly 27 years, starting as a busser and working her way up to general manager — became the owner. That’s the kind of ownership transition a neighborhood institution deserves.

The room itself is classic small-town diner: no frills, generous portions, the kind of place where the coffee gets refilled before you ask. Ramona sits in the foothills of San Diego County, and the cafe has the feel of somewhere that’s been anchoring the community through all of it since the 1930s.

What to Eat at Ramona Cafe

The Giant Pecan Cinnamon Rolls are the signature and the thing most people come specifically to eat. Half a pound of dough, baked fresh daily, sized in a way that suggests the kitchen doesn’t believe in restraint. Guy Fieri could barely fit one in his mouth on camera. Order one early — they sell out.

The Chicken Cordon Bleu was the other standout from the DDD episode — deep-fried after baking, topped with hollandaise, served in a portion size that arrives with authority. The Chicken Fried Steak is a longtime menu staple made with a ground beef and veal combination, served with all the sides. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served seven days a week.
