13 Gypsies – Jacksonville, Florida

13 Gypsies on Stockton Street in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood has been bringing Spanish tapas and creative pasta to a city that didn’t have much of either since chef-owner Eunice Trotti opened it, building a menu around the bold flavors of the Iberian Peninsula executed with genuine skill in a small, intimate dining room. It appeared in Season 9, Episode 3 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, “Globetrottin’,” which aired May 10, 2010. Guy Fieri found a kitchen producing Spanish-influenced food at a level that would hold up in any major food city, in a Jacksonville neighborhood that was lucky to have it.

What to Eat

The Patatas Bravas — fried potatoes with spicy aioli — are the Spanish tapa most regulars order first. The Gambas al Ajillo (garlic shrimp sautéed in olive oil with chiles and sherry) is the other tapa that defines what the kitchen does. The House-Made Pasta, rotating with the season, reflects the Italian side of the menu that runs alongside the Spanish dishes. The Paella, served for two or more, is the showpiece order worth planning ahead. The wine list leans Spanish and pairs with the food in ways that generic restaurant wine lists rarely manage.
