Guy Fieri described The Village Café as “part dive, part bar, but all neighborhood joint.” That’s a precise description of what has been going on at 1001 West Grace Street in Richmond’s Fan District since 1956. The Village Café appeared in Season 3, Episode 4 of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives — “Neighborhood Joints,” aired March 31, 2008 — and it delivered two things that earned the segment: “crunchy crunch” ale-battered onion rings and stromboli stuffed with ham, salami, mozzarella, and green peppers. Nearly seven decades of neighborhood joint credibility backed both of them up.

About The Village Café
The Village Café has been on the corner of Harrison and Grace in Richmond’s Fan District — a walkable neighborhood of Victorian rowhouses adjacent to Virginia Commonwealth University — since 1956. The VCU crowd has kept it full for decades, but the regulars are as likely to be longtime Fan residents as students. The menu covers breakfast, pancakes, omelets, subs, wraps, sandwiches, burgers, pizza, pastas, salads, and vegetarian options. The atmosphere is exactly what Guy’s description suggested: a neighborhood place that doesn’t pretend to be more than it is, and has been exactly what it is for nearly 70 years.
The onion rings — battered in a homemade mixture of Pabst Blue Ribbon and a draft stout — are the dish that built a following well before the DDD appearance. They remain the signature.
What to Eat at The Village Café
The Ale-Battered Onion Rings — made with a beer batter of PBR and stout — are the signature and the dish most people order first. The Stromboli with ham, salami, mozzarella, and green peppers is the other headliner from the DDD episode. The Omelets, Burgers, and Milkshakes round out a menu that covers all the neighborhood bases without overcomplicating anything.

Flavortown Approved
The Village Café’s ale-battered ring game deserves its own tribute at home. Guy Fieri’s Flavortown Garlic Butter Dry Rub is the seasoning to reach for when you’re frying — and Guy’s Top Secret Sauce is the dipping finish.
